Connect ChatGPT to Homespun

Homespun's connector is a standard OAuth-protected Streamable HTTP MCP endpoint, not a Claude-specific integration, so any chat app that supports remote MCP connectors can use it.

Read this before you start. In ChatGPT, adding a custom MCP connector requires Developer mode. It is not available on the free plan (Pro, Plus, Business, Enterprise and Education only), OpenAI labels it elevated risk, and OpenAI describes it as being for "developers who understand how to safely configure and test apps". If that is not you, use Claude instead: it takes the same one URL, works on the free plan, and needs no mode switched on.

  1. Turn on Developer mode

    In ChatGPT, open Settings, then Security and login, and turn on Developer mode. Custom MCP connectors do not appear anywhere until you do, which is why the connector screen looks missing on a fresh account.

  2. Add the Homespun server URL

    Give it the name Homespun and the server URL https://homespun.dev/mcp. There is no API key and no client secret to configure: the client registers itself.

  3. Complete the sign-in

    Approve the OAuth prompt when it appears. Sign in to Homespun with your email magic link, then approve the consent screen, and the connector reports itself as connected.

  4. Ask for an app

    Describe what you want in the chat. ChatGPT calls the Homespun tools, and you get back a link to a real hosted app you can open and share.

If Developer mode is not offered on your plan, or you would rather not enable it, nothing is lost. Claude takes the same single URL with no mode to switch on and works on its free plan, and the coding agents (Claude Code, Cursor) connect in under a minute. Whichever you pick, the apps land in the same account.

If something goes wrong

The two most common snags are a blocked pop-up (the sign-in opens in a new window) and a shell that cannot find the homespun binary after installing it. The full troubleshooting list covers the rest, and the docs site explains what a connection can and cannot do.
